Poem Analysis of W. H. Auden

Hello, I am Himanshi Parmar, student of MK Bhavnagar University. This blog i have written in a response of Thinking Activity, Which is a Part of my academic Work. Which we get after each unit. In this blog, i am going to analyze some poems of W. H. Auden. Before that, let me give some information about W. H. Auden.

About W.H.Auden :-

Full name of W.H.Auden is Wystan Huge Auden. He was a great British - American poet. Main themes of the Auden's poem is Politics, love, religion, morals etc. Also his poetry generally known for it's unique style, and technique. During his lifetime, Auden published more than four hundred poems, including seven long poems. And two if them was written in a length of a book. Along with poems he also wrote more than four hundred essays and reviews about literature, history, politics, music, religion and many more. His most famous works are,

1) Funeral Blues
2) September 1, 1939
3) The Shield of Achilles
4) The Age of Anxiety
5) For the time being
6) Horae Canonicae

Here is some videos about Auden,

1) Auden's poem seems to be written in our times for 2022. Justify this in context of pendemic and Russia - Ukraine war.

Here, i am going to analyze three poems of Auden, as a pendemic poem.

1) September 1 1939
2) In Memory of W. B. Yeats
3) Epitaph on a Tyrant

1) September 1 1939

The poem is remembering history of September 1, 1939. Setting of the poem is in a bar of New York City. The poem Coveys the poet's emotional response to the outbreak of Worldwar two. Poem talks about German's attack on Poland. Though it is a War poem, we are also able to see it as pendemic poem.

In the first stanza we find the lines like,

Uncertain and afraid
 As the clever hope expire,
Of a low dishonest decades:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth,
Obsessing our private lives;
The unmentioned oduour of death.

This we can connect with pendemic, that during pendemic time, we see that situation is also become like this, people are quarantine during the corona time. They wasn't allowed to go out, to meet their friends, family and closeones. And so that they are afraid, they are frustrated, they lost their hopes, and they were looking the decade as a full of chaos and dishonest. Many of the people loose their jobs, their business, poor people were suffering by starvation, and so their starvation came out as a Waves of anger. Along with this, we saw that many of the people were died during the corona time as well as Spanish flu or plague. Which is reflected through the lines, "The unmentionable odour of death". Numerous people were died and no one was there to count or to care. No one was there to cremate people.even government gave false report of death in corona which later proved in high court. Here is the news of that. (Click here)

Here is some videos of people in frustration, and in anger during Covid time.

Then in second stanza we find lines like,

The enlightenment driven away,
The habit - forming pain,
Mismanagement and grief :
We must suffer them all again.

This lines are also connected with Corona time as we see during the corona, mainly we were in quarantine. And so that many of our habits get changed. Which is not so easy thing. And it formed pain, mismanagement and grief. So this reference we find here. Here is one article, which talk about this situation.(Click here)

Here is one video also which again reflect my point. Along with that, some of the paintings which is related with corona time.

Then in next lines,

Exiled Thucydides knew
All that a speech can say
About Democracy,
And what dictators do,
The elderly rubbish they talk
To an apathetic grave;

In this lines we find similarity between poland - German war and Ukraine - Russia war. As here mentioned that what dictators do and leaders talk about democracy is all rubbish thing. Similarly now a day Putin, prime minister of the Russia, talk about democracy and behind the curtain of democracy he is constantly attacking over Ukraine and destroying it. That's why people use to consider him as a Adolf Putin. Means Adolf Hitler ± Vladimir Putin = Adolf Putin

At the end we find a lines like,

And the lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky:
There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love one another or die.

Here we are able to connect this with Russia - Ukraine war, that authority for their own selfishness, sacrifice lifes of so many soldiers as well as public. We find that the authority is not fighting themselves. They are the soldiers who are fighting for the nation. And what authority doing is just giving orders from their building which grope the sky. And that is something problematic. So, this is something which i find from the poem about pendemic and similarity of poem and Russia - Ukraine war.

2) In Memory of W. B. Yeats

Section one :-

In the section one, poet display the situation after the death of W. B. Yeats. He wrote that the day of his death "was a dark cold day". He also wrote that, the things happening as it is. Nothing could change in world. As he wrote that,

Far from his illness
The wolves ran on through the evergreen forests,
The peasant river was untempted by the fashionable quays;
By mourning tongues
The death of the poet was kept from his poems.

This lines shows that, nothing could change. But for poet it was his last afternoon as himself. He was died but his poems keep them alive. Not physically, but in the memory of his readers, in the criticism done by critics on his life and poetry.

The words of a dead man
Are modified in the guts of the living.

He got no appreciation for his life. But A few thousand will think of this day, means few thousands are remember the day of his death as a special day.

The poem is about a death of particular one poet, but we find that many writers and poets were died due to corona. Though they were died, people still remember them, remember their lives by their works just like W. B. Yeats. People used to talk about them, critics criticises their works as well as their lives. Just one difference is people are not celebrating his death as a public holiday. During Covid - 19, many of the writers were died but very few people were know them. Here is the articles about writers and poets who were died due to corona, click on that to read.

In this part poet also mentioned that, even though yeats died, he still living in the memory of readers of his poems, critics of his poetry. We find that some poets become immortal for their contributions, like there is one poet named U Soso Tham, whose anniversary, people still celebrate as a public holiday in Meghalaya. read the article given here, Click here

Second section :-

In this part Auden consider Yeats as a silly, just like other people in the world. And says that his poetry make no changes, as he wrote,

For poetry makes nothing happen:

This we can directly connect with corona. As we know that after the world war one and two, numerous poets and writers wrote about disaster, damages, Harmfulness, people's suffering, pain, Chaos, Injustice.. Etc...Etc.. Etc... The poets and writers like 1) Wilfred Owen, 2) John McCrae, 3) Alan Seeger, 4) Veera Britain, 5) Rupert Brooke and many eles wrote about the topics mentioned above. Also we find lots of war poems which reflect the tone i have mentioned above, poems like, 1)War Baby by Pamela Holmes, 2) We Are Not Blessed by Nikolay Mayorov, 3) The Day's March by Robert Nichols..etc. In this all poems and the writers i have mentioned they all are wrote about war and it's disadvantages but still we see that, war between Russia and Ukraine take place. It means somewhere literature is lacking, people, authority are not reading or we can say not understanding it. That's why constantly history will repeating itself.

Section Three :-

In the final section poet wrote about condition of his society. World war one was just ended and people were not came out of it's effect and though world war two he was on the way. And the condition is very pitiful. As poet wrote that,

Intellectual disgrace
Stares from every human face,
And the seas of pity lie
Locked and frozen in each eye.

This condition, is also reflected in today's time. As we see, the entire world was suffered by Pendemic / Corona time for three years constantly. Till 2019 to 2021, and we see that now in 2022, situation seems to get normal back. People are still not came out of pendemic effect and in one corner of world start war. Yes, it is Russia and Ukraine who are fighting. And if the fighting will not get over soon then it is possible that world war three may get start. So again people are in fear,  no one knows that what will happen by very next moment.

So this are some of the major similarities i have find from this poem.

3) Epitaph on a Tyrant

The poem Epitaph on a Tyrant is particularly satire, written on Adolf Hitler. It is very short six line's poem.  The poem starts with the line,

Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;

In this we find a picture of Utopian world. Words like perfection, easy to understand. This all are reflecting utopian idea. Which we can connect with Vladimir Putin as he is also constantly talking about Utopian, ideal world. In the case of Russia - Ukraine war. He gave reason that most of the people of Ukraine, are Russians and they asked us for help and so that, we are attacking on Ukraine to save them, to liberate them, it is a virtual step. Here is a video as a proof what i have written.

He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;

Here, we see that Tyrone like armies and fleets, which reflects cruelty and Battle adoring nature. Which again remind us Vladimir Putin. How he choose war instead of Peace. And then the last two lines,

When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.

Here, direct meaning of first line is very positive that, Tyrone wants to make their senators happy, but if we see, we find one hidden meaning. That there is a feeling of compulsion. Burst with laughter is a sign of artificial, loud laughter. Then in second line we find reference of religion. The line is connected with New Testament, ‘But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven'. For Jesus, the Ideal kingdom are those, who are not forbid people about religion and are not forbid their religious beliefs. Similar thing we find that Vladimir Putin is strongly believe in Christianity. And the Russia - Ukraine war is somewhere resulted for religion too.  Here is the video which talks about that.

This is my understanding about all the three poems with the reference of pendemic / Corona situation and Russia - Ukraine war. It is very difficult for me to relate poems with Russia - Ukraine war. Because i was not habituated to read newspaper and to watch news in television. Though i have searched as much as i could. And try to make blog. {I will soon put link of another question, queer study of theme of lack of acceptance of homosexuality in society.} I hope my blog will be helpful to you! If you find some more points about anything related my blog, then write it in comment section. It will help me to expand my vision and will increase quality of my blog. Transcendentalism

Hello, I am Himanshi Parmar, student of MK Bhavnagar University. This blog i have written in a response of Thinking Activity, Which is a Part of my academic Work. Which we get after each unit. In this blog, i am going to discuss about transcendentalism and similar Indian philosophy. Along with that, i am also going to discuss what is nature according to me. I hope my blogs will be helpful to you.

What is transcendentalism :-

According to Oxford dictionary :-

1)         Transcendentalism is an idealistic philosophical and social movement which developed in New England around 1836 in reaction to rationalism. Influenced by romanticism, Platonism, and Kantian philosophy, it taught that divinity pervades all nature and humanity, and its members held progressive views on feminism and communal living. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were central figures.

2)        transcendentalism is a system developed by Immanuel Kant, based on the idea that, in order to understand the nature of reality, one must first examine and analyse the reasoning process which governs the nature of experience.

1} Transcendentalists talks about individual's relation with nature. What is nature for you? Share your views.

According to me, Nature is a eternal, it's a Diversified. Nature is not only giving sources to survive all the beings.but also give mental peace.and when it is about me! then nature for me is a Vitality, as well as peace. I never get tired of watching nature. Instead of watching i should use the word feeling nature. It is not just giving peace, along with that nature give many life lessons also. It taught me how to reduce anger, and stress and increases pleasant feelings in mind.also nature, at some point of time make me fearless. So for me Nature is a teacher, friend, home, peace, shelter, and a disaster too.

2} Transcendentalism is an American philosophy that influenced American Literature at length. Can you find any Indian/ Regional literature or philosophy came up with such similar thought?

Transcendentalists are used to believe in self love and for that they tell to be separate from society. We find many similar thoughts in Indian philosophy. Some of them I have discuss here.

1) Meditation :

Meditation is a process of disconnecting from world and it is a process of self identification. There is one meditation form called Transcendental meditation, originated by Maharishi Mahesh yogi, in India in the mid - 1950s. The technique of Transcendental meditation is about awareness, stress relief and access to high states of consciousness. This kind of meditation is involves use of a silently used mantra for fifteen to twenty minutes, twice in a day, while sitting with the eyes closed. This is similar of what transcendentalists said about.

2) Samakhya :-

Samakhya is oldest philosophical school, and it believes that everything in reality originated from Purusha and prakriti. Purusha is something we can consider self or soul or mind. Prakriti is matter or energy. According to this school, the ultimate goal of life is liberation which is soul's realisations. Which is suppose to transcendentalists are also believes.

3) Samsara :-

In this indian Philosophy, most of the philosophers believe that, world (Society) is a suffering, and the highest goal of life is lliberation.

4) Buddhism :-

As similar of Philosophy of Samsara, Buddhism is also believe that all the pain and suffering ends when we separate ourselves from world. And try to understand one own self. For them self is most important as transcendentalists gave three basic essential values : Individualism, Idealism, and divinity of nature.

5) Vedas, Puranas, Mahakavyas :-

When we analyse Tales of vedas, puranas, Mahakavyas. We found that nature is always in the center and human's relations with nature are portrayed in very positive light. In transcendentalism we find divinity of nature, similar divinity of nature we find in most of the ancient writing. If we see Kavyas of Kalidasa, we find beautiful description of nature. Not only the description of nature but man's relations with nature is also shown gloriously. Which again reminds us nature love and thoughts of Transcendentalists.

Hello, I am Himanshi Parmar, student of MK Bhavnagar University. This blog i have written as a response to Thinking Activity, Which is a Part of my academic Work. Which we get after each unit. In this blog, i am going to discuss about Eugene O'Neill, Summary of the play and Theme of Addition in play. I hope my Blog will be helpful to you.

About the play :-

Long day's journey into night, is a play written in four acts. The play was written by American Playwright Eugene O'Neill. The play was written in 1939 - 41. And it was first published in 1956. After the death of Eugene O'Neill. The play is known as a finest American play of 20th century. gener of the play is Tragedy. And setting is of the summer home of the Tyrones, August 1912. The play includes five characters. Among them Mary Tyrone is consider as a protagonist. All the characters are very well portrait by O'Neill.

About the Author :-

Full name of O'Neill is Eugene Gladstone O'Neill. He was an American Playwright and also a Noble Laureate in literature. He won noble prize in 1936. He was born on 16 October 1888, in United States and died on 27 November 1953. Here I put one video of Documentry film on O'Neill's life.

Eugene wrote many famous works like,

1) Long day's journey into night.

2) The Iceman Cometh.

3) Desire Under the Elms.

4) Mourning Becomes Electra.

5) The Hairy Ape.

Here, is the videos of all the films, based on the books of O'Neill, I have mentioned above.

Summary of Long day's journey into night :-

The play begins in the summer house of Tyrone Family. It is a time of morning when the play begins. In first act we find that Mary Tyrone is just returned from the sanatorium. She was sent there because of her morphine addiction. Mary is a protagonist of the play. Edmund, Son of Mary and James, become ill in recent weeks and started coughing violently. And later we come to know that, he is suffering from tuberculosis. Similarly as play go on, we found that, Mary is still taking morphine. And when we see entire play, we get idea that all of the members of Tyron family are suffering from their past. As we see Mr.Tyron is blaming himself for Mary's morphine addiction. Jamie is ashamed that he is not able to find work accordingly his father accepts from him. Mary is constantly try to ignore her present and past by taking morphine.he constantly try to forgetting that she is still addicted with morphine and also a thing that his son Edmund has a tuberculosis. Along with Mary, Edmund is also suffering by illness and with a mental stress that he has a tuberculosis and he will soon die.

All the characters are addicted and all the scenes are related with the regret, stress, sorrow of family members. If we analyse the play we find that, most of the scenes are performed either before a mealtime or after a mealtime. And all the scenes where performed in living room. Which create a perticular kind of motion. The story ends tragically. Here is the video of full play of Long day's journey into night.

Theme of addiction in long day's journey into night :-

Addition of Mary Tyrone :-

We find theme of addiction in the play. All the Tyrone members are addicted with something. For example Mary is addicted by morphine, a kind of drug. She got this addiction while she was pregnant. Mr.Tyron neglected to hire a good doctor and a doctor whom he was appointed for Mary gave her constantly medicines which consist major part of morphin in it. Which lead Mary towards addition of morphin to reduce the pain of pregnancy. And even after the pregnancy, she continue to take morphine. Later on in play we found that, she was sent to sanatorium, but even after she came back, she started taking morphine again, and the reason we found for this is, she want to ignore or we can say forget about the illness of his loving son Edmund and her own past as well.

Addition of Jamie :-

Jamie is addicted with alcohol as well as a Women. Here we see a theme of sexuality. We find reason for each Tyrone member's addition. Jamie is addicted with alcohol and women is because he living constantly in regression that even though he is young, elegible, and a elder son of the family, he is not earning accordingly the expectations of his father. And ultimately this regret lead him towards addition of Alcohol. We can say that, drunkenness has been Jamie's response to life, and it is part of why he has failed so miserably.

Addiction of James Tyrone :-

James is a father of Edmund and Jamie, and a husband of Mary, is also addicted with alcohol. And as I discussed before, that each Tyrone member addicted with something because of to reduc the pain of past. James is also living with a regret that he failed to provide good fortune and good wealthy life to his family. They have just summer house, excepting that, they have no fortune. Which ultimately make him feel depressed and lead him towards regression of this. Even Mary play major role for his regression, she constantly try to make him feel guilty that because of him Edmund is sick. Jamie also blame his father that he is the one who responsible for his mother's addition. He was failed to provide her good doctor and that's why she started taking morphine. This all blames and regression, guilt lead him towards the addiction of alcohol.

Addition of Edmund :-

Just like his father James and brother Jamie, Edmund is also addicted with alcohol. We can say that all the Tyrone men are addicted with alcohol. Addition of alcohol, affects on his health. He has a tuberculosis, and constant addition of alcohol lead him towards bad health. And at the end we found that he loose his health. He is very close to death. Because his tuberculosis got out of control.

In short, we are able to analyse that, because of addiction, the entire Tyrone family ruined.and this addition lead them towards constant anxiety, illness, frustration and mental instability.

Indian Poetics

Hello, I am Himanshi Parmar, student of MK Bhavnagar University. This blog i have written in a response of Thinking Activity, Which is a Part of my academic Work. Which we get after each unit. In this blog, i am have written about Indian Poetics and it's six parts like Rasa, Alamkara, Riti, Devani, Vakrokti, and Aucitya. But before that, let me discuss about what is Indian poetics.

What is Indian poetics ?

Generally indian literature is known as a Indian poetics. As specially the ancient Sanskrit literature like Vedas, Purana, Upnishad, and the poetry.

Aristotle gave definition of poetics, according to him poetics means Kavya. And Indian poetics means Kavya which is written in India, In Indian language. In Indian poetics we find six schools or theory.

1) The Rasa theory

2) The Alamkara theory

3) The Dhvani theory

4) The Vakrokti theory

5) The Riti Theory

6) The aucitya theory

1] Rasa Theory :-

Rasa means emotional state of mind. Rasa theory was established by Bharata. He gave the process of Rasa sequel, for that he wrote that,

विभावानुभावव्यभिचारी संयोगात रसनिष्पति:।

This sentence taken from sixth part of natyasastra. The sentence made up by four words,

१) विभाव :- Object

२) अनुभाव :- our response / outer expressions.

३) व्यभिचारी भाव :- Transitory emotions

४) संयोग :- Combination of all this.

In short,When Object, our Emotions and expression comes together, at that time Rasa energize.

According to Bharata, Rasa is of nine kind.

१) करुण - Sorrow

२) भयानक - Terror

३) रौद्र - Anger

४) शृंगार - रति - love

५) वीर - उत्साह - Energy

६) हास्य - Mirth

७) बिभत्स - जुगुप्सा - Disgust

८) अदभुत - विस्मय - Astonishment

९) शांत - निर्वेद - Calm

It is believed that, Rasa Theory is superior than all other theories, there are four commenters who wrote something about this Rasa theory of Bharata. Let me discuss them in short.

1) Bhattlollata :-

According to him "नट्ट"(natt) is the only originator of Rasa. To prove his point he gave theory of "उत्पत्तिवाद".

2) shrishankuka :-

Shankuka gave a theory of "अनुमीतिवाद", in it, he wrote that, it is not possible to generate Rasa, because it is all are our illusions. According to Shankuka we can assume the world variously, there are four parts to assume it.

१) सम्यक प्रतिति - as it is

२) मिथ्या प्रतिति - through Illusion.

३) सादृश प्रतिति - Similar of world

४) संशय प्रतिति - through Probability.

3) Bhattanayka :-

He gave a theory of "साधारणीकरण", means according to Bhattanayka, when one can feel same pain, same happiness, same anger, disgust, joy, as other.at that time rasa origin. Emotional connection is important. Without that you can not feel anything or no rasa will emerge.

4) AbhinavaGupta :-

He gave the best reaction on bharata's natyasastra. He wrote treatise named "लोचन". According to him avoy is rasa. you can feel delight in pain, in anger, in sorrow, in disgust, and even in Astonishment. And that is the true rasa out come.

This is about Rasa theory. To understand it more clearly (click here)

2] Dhvani theory :-

Dhvani theory is all about language, it is regarded with a meaning of sentence or word. Power of suggestion, and power of words. It is very important to understand meaning behind what is spoken. It is possible that what is spoken is actually not mean it. But it create a different sense. For example when someone says, YOU ARE A LION.

The simple meaning we get is the human whom the sentence addresses, is a lion. But it is not possible scientifically. but if we have literary sense, knowledge of language, and understanding of meaning, we can easily assume that the person wants to say that, YOU ARE A BRAVE OR YOU ARE A COURAGEOUS. Language is always a deceivers. And Dhvani is all about language. And it is about how one can interpret it.

Anandavardhana wrote a treatise, named "Dhvanyavloka", in that he wrote that, Kavya is a result of words and its meaning. He further wrote that, Dhvani is a soul of Kavya. Language don't have meaning of its own. But it is implanted on language. Generally Dhvani means, esoteric meaning of what being told or what being said. Dhvani is divided into two parts,

1) Prakrata Dhvani :-

Prakrata dhvani is a sound of norms. Or we can say meaning behind meaning. For example if I say, A girl with moon face. Means a girl is beautiful.

2) Vaikrta Dhvani :-

The actual sound of what is spoken is called vaikrta dhvani. For example if I say, A girl with a moon face. Means a girl has a moon in place of face.

Dhvani is divided into three major types.

1) Vastu dhvani
2) Alankaara dhvani
3) Rasa dhvani.

Vastu dhvani and Alankaara dhvani can be expressed by direct meaning or by suggestions. But Rasa dhvani is more important. It is not expressed directly. But it come out through emotions or suggestions.

1) vastu dhvani :-

Sudden blast of meaning.

2) Alankaara dhvani

Alankar make dhvani more beautiful or thriller.

3) Rasa dhvani

Indirect meaning of sentence. Which is more interesting.

Mammta explain dhvani in three fold functions.

1) Abhidha
2) Lakshana
3) Vyanjana

1) Abhidha :-

Abhidha means denotation. Which give direct meaning of what is spoken. For example Darkness eats him every day. It simply means darkness eating a man. Which is not possible scientifically but if we look for direct meaning, we get this.

2) Lakshana :-

Lakshana means indication. or Inferior meaning of what is spoken.where we are not able to take direct meaning, we understand the sentence by inferior meaning.

3) Vyanjana :-

Vyanjana means suggestions, when we are able to get direct meaning of words and still we don't take it and look for another meaning is called vyanjana.for example, when we say, Darkness eats him every day. It simply means darkness is eating him. But indirect meaning is he is in pain and sorrow. And when we understand this meaning which is not even spoken. that is called vyanjana.

3] Vakrokti Theory :-

Kuntaka a Sanskrit poetician and literary theoriest wrote a treatise named Vakroktijivitam. In which he gave an idea of Vakrokti theory. He gave definition of Vakrokti,

"विशिष्टभंगीभणिति" - कुंतक

Vakrokti means specifically stated.

Vakrokti is something which is not told directly, but it gives indirect meaning. Or we can say sometimes it is similar to taunting. According to Kuntaka, beauty is not in directness, but it is in sarcasm. Kuntaka divided Vakrokti into six major types.

1) phonetic figurativeness (Varnavinyasa vakrata):-

Repitation of words are called alliteration.in this type we find alliteration in words. For example :- piter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

2) Lexical figurativeness :-

It is also called Padpurvardha vakrata. If a word affects the next word it called Lexical figurativeness. For example, Your Red dress is beautiful. In which red is affecting dress.it is giving a sense that only red dress is beautiful not any other dress.

3) Grammatical figurativeness ( pratyaya vakrata) :-

If the word affects the word before it, that is called pratyaya vakrata. For example, give me your small car to drive. Here, car is affecting the word set before it. Like we can interpret that one can ask for a car only, not for bike, not for truck or anything. Just car.so here car is effecting the words set before it.

4) Sentential figurativeness (Vakyavakrata) :-

Sometimes a simple sentence become so important because of its meaning. For because of our capability to interpret it variously which is called Sentential figurativeness. For example sometimes some simple film dialogues grab attention of majority. It is because of Vakyavakrata in it. Basically, the sentence which gives some meaning to listeners it is called Sentential figurativeness.

5) Contextual figurativeness ( prakarana vakrata) :-

Contextual figurativeness is something in which, the sentence or tale is told by someone before but then it interpret newly. Its all about interpretation. For example, literary books which is based on ancient literature like Mahabharata, Ramayana, Vedas, puranas etc.

6) management Curvature (prabanda vakrata) :-

In this, the form of the work is not matter, but the central idea and we can say the core idea is important. And how and in what form people get it that's important.

4] Alamkara theory :-

Bhamaha give theory of Alamkara in his treatise named "Kavyalankara". He talks about the pleasure of multiplicity of meaning inherent in certain Alamkaras. According to Bhamaha, there is no language without Alamkara. But what is Alamkara and what it's importance in Language or in Indian poetics that we have to see.

General meaning of Alamkara is Ornament. Which is wears by women. And Alankara increase the beauty of women. Similarly to increase the beauty of language, people use Alamkara. Alamkara divided into two main types.

1) Shabdalamkara ( Shabda + Alamkara)

Shabdalamkara is something which increase the value of Words. Or we can say value of sentence and language.

2) Arthalamkara ( Artha + Alamkara )

Arthalamkara increase the value of meaning.

Shabda alamkara and Artha Alamkara is also divided into parts, Here is the chart of that.

Mammta described Alamkara in sixty-one figures of speech. And divide them all in seven main parts.

1) Rupaka ( Metaphor)

Example :- He is a walking Encyclopaedia.

2) Upama ( Simile )

This book is as interesting as the book I have read before.

3) Vyatiraeka ( Dissimilitude )

Example :- The diversity of colleges in this country indicates that many levels of ability are being served.

4) Aprastuta Prasnsa ( Indirect description)

Example :- Her lighthouse smile beckoned across the crowd.

5) Virodha ( Contradiction )

Example :-

1) I am not Himanshi.

2) my name is officially Himanshi.

3) all are know me as Himanshi, accepting my family.

Here sentence two and three is Contradiction for sentence one.

6) Dipaka ( Stringed figure )

7) Samuccaya ( Concatenation )

There are three key figures of In Alamkara,

1) Bhamaha - Kavyalankara

2) Dandi - Kavyadarsha
